A pregnant lawyer in search of an informed, calmer birth experience, I came across Hypnobirthing during some late-night internet searching. Intrigued by the refreshingly positive and practical outlook on birth, I signed up to a course (and then spent the evening convincing my husband I hadn't gone mad and become a hippy).
The scientific foundations that Hypnobirthing is built on, silenced the sceptic within and I was instantly a convert. My pregnancy was positive and enjoyable as I practised the relaxation and breathing techniques with my partner - I was even looking forward to my birth!
My labour was short and the majority of time was spent in the bath at home. Despite some intervention in the final stages, I never lost faith in myself, my partner or my baby. After the birth of my son Theo, looking for a change of pace and wanting to spread the word of Hypnobirthing, MAMACAN Hypnobirthing was born.
I am a KG Hypnobirthing trained practitioner and accredited by the Royal College of Midwives. I teach group and private classes largely in South West London or over Skype although am looking to expand and have lots of exciting projects in the pipeline!
I believe passionately about changing the way society views birth, and helping women understand their innate ability to give birth and ultimately achieve the best possible outcome for them and their baby.
"I do not care what kind of birth you have... a homebirth, scheduled cAesarean, epidural hospital birth, or if you birth alone in the woods next to baby deer.
I care that you had options, that you were supported in your choices, and that you were respected."
WHAT IS HYPNOBIRTHING?
With a bit of luck you go into a strange, spaced-out state where hopefully something magical happens and you don't notice the pain and then someone hands you a baby? While the name "Hypnobirthing" implies something hippy-dippy involving sandals and candles, nothing could be further from the truth.
Hypnobirthing is a science based, logical approach to childbirth, which teaches you to understand the physiology of birth, along with relaxation techniques which in turn allow your body to work naturally and effectively. It enables women to understand and work with their bodies which are perfectly designed to give birth naturally.
It is a complete antenatal programme that turns on its head the notion that childbirth is something to be feared, and releases the negativity that you have been programmed with from an early age (everyone knows birth is painful, right?)
While Hypnobirthing cannot guarantee a perfect birth, it informs and empowers you to make the right decisions for you and your baby. It can reduce the need for pain relief and shorten labour, and you are more likely to experience a calm, comfortable and natural birth. It actively encourages the involvement of the birth partner both in the preparation and the birth, and gives you confidence to be informed about the options available to you throughout your pregnancy.
If you were going to run a marathon, sit an exam or attend a job interview you would presumably prepare. Birth is no different, and Hypnobirthing allows you to remove your head from the sand and realise how wonderful and empowering birth can be.
